Individual and Family Counseling

Counseling Services are available at convenient locations in Hilo, Pahoa and West Hawaii to meet the needs of the Big Island’s adults, children, adolescents, individuals, couples and families. All services are provided by Hawaii Licensed Counselors, Social Workers, and Marriage & Family Therapists.

Our Counselors

Emily (Barber) Malate, LCSW, QMHP

10 years working with teenagers. Six years post graduate experience providing clinical services and supervision with teenagers and families. Notable experience with trauma, domestic abuse/dating violence, immigrant populations and ODD. Worked in a residential treatment center for four years, as a therapist and later as a Clinical Director for four years.
Trained in the DBT skill training modules for adolescents; individual, family, groups; adolescents with trauma, depression or relational issues, 7101 and 7103, SEBD/MHA Assessments

Office is located in Hilo.

*Cannot serve any clients that are currently receiving VCM services with Foster Family Programs of Hawaii.

Rebecca Keolanui, M.A., LMFT, QMHP

American Schools of Professional Psychology (currently Argosy University). Received Masters in Professional Counseling with emphasis on marriage and family therapy.
Employed by TIFFE previously for three years as MST therapist and then as a home-based family and school-based therapist. I have currently rejoined the TIFFE family doing the later (13101) beginning in March of this year.
Previous to working with TIFFE, I worked as a diversion specialist, home-based therapist (based on the Homebuilders Model), and taught Common Sense Parenting classes.

I work in the Hilo area with families and children of all ages, but especially enjoy teen agers. Areas of expertise include oppositional behavior, depression, and family and relational issues.

Began professional service in October of 1980 with emotionally disturbed youth in Los Angeles in residential treatment and through an outpatient clinic. Experience working with the treatment of victims of disaster and trauma. Worked with the military’s family advocacy program on Oahu serving both victims and perpetrators of child and spouse abuse. Worked with Child and Family Service’s Therapeutic Foster Home program. My area of specialization is disruptive behavior disorders in children. Currently I can work in Hilo, Puna or Kea’au, though I would prefer the latter two locations.
